why i joined melius

I've been asked by my parents, friends, and randoms: why did you join Melius?

After reflecting on my past few months starting full-time here, I realize that places like Melius are the only workplaces where life doesn't feel mundane, and where I don't mind that I see these people more than my own family.

Let's go back to the beginning.

My Google internship announcement and my future boss’s quote tweet

I got an internship at Google, something I was ecstatic about at the moment. My now boss quoted me and made fun of me on the internet.

That's when I knew. This is exactly where I wanted to work.

After my Google internship ended, I started full-time at Melius and fully moved to NYC before I even finished my college degree.

At any company, people will always say they love the culture. I don't think anyone truly understands company culture until they spend a day at Melius. Somehow, they managed to make me excited to go to work, talk to everyone, and do things I would usually avoid as a homebody.

To be honest, this is less of a blog and more of an appreciation post of pictures I've managed to gather over the past few months.

Before I show off some cool moments, I'd like a part of this to be me talking about working here. I've learned so much at Melius, not just in engineering. Trying to manage engineering, marketing collateral, and other efforts outside of just basic software engineering has made my time here much more enjoyable, less repetitive, and anything but mundane. I've shipped more PRs in a month here than I have in 20 years prior to joining, and I'm always trying to be more efficient.

Anyways, let's show off the fun stuff.

Shitposting with my boss at Melius
Shitposting with my boss (I'm not even an intern??)
Celebrating my 21st birthday with the team
Getting two tables at a night club for my 21st birthday (thx Joowon)
Playing Super Smash Bros with coworkers at the office
I've probably spent over 200 hours playing Super Smash Bros with Young, Ray, Jahow, and Arnav. There have been many days where I've stayed at the office past 9pm to play Smash.
Playing a vibe-coded game together

The Melius team at our company launch offsite
Company offsite for our launch, with a private chef :)
An outing with Melius coworkers Another spontaneous team outing More memories from an outing with the team
A bunch of random impulse outings for food, drinks, or sweet treats

So many more memories I don't have pictures of:

  • Many team dinners (A LOT of hot pot and kbbq)
  • Playing basketball at 2am after a night out
  • Generating Tung Tung videos
  • Random wagers
  • Trying to come up with viral tweets

So when people ask me why I joined, this is what I want to tell them. Rejecting any offer in big tech was a no-brainer. I've never wanted to win so bad before, and I want to do it with this group of people.

If you are cracked and interested in joining, you should apply :)
